Doubao Not Loading or Network Error? Tell Outage from Your Network

When Doubao (ByteDance's AI assistant, popular in China) won't open, first work out whether Doubao itself is broken or only your connection to it is. In the first case you can only wait for the vendor to fix it. In the second, the most common cause is a proxy running on your computer or phone that routes traffic for a China-based service out through an overseas server, which makes it slow or makes it fail outright. The steps below go in this order: server side, then local network and proxy, then client cache and login. Each step has a check you can run right away.

Doubao won't load: is it down for everyone?

When "Doubao is down" trends on Chinese social media, many people really are hitting problems at the same time, and fiddling with your local network is pointless. There are three ways to tell, from fastest to slowest:

  1. Open cdnping's Doubao status page, /down/doubao. It combines the official status page, an API probe every 5 minutes, and one-tap user reports (won't open, slow, logged out, and so on). If reports of "won't open" have clustered recently, it is most likely a server-side problem. You can also file a report yourself to help the next person.
  2. Try a different network. Turn off Wi-Fi and use mobile data on your phone, or connect your computer to a phone hotspot. If that fixes it, the problem is in your original network. If not, go to the next check.
  3. Try a different entry point. Open the web version, the mobile app and the desktop client one by one. If only one is broken, it is most likely a cache or version problem in that client. If all of them are broken and step 1 shows many reports, it is the server side.

Trending topics and short videos only tell you that some people are affected, not that you have the same problem. If your problem is actually caused by a proxy, stopping at the trending topic means no amount of waiting will fix it.

Is Doubao being down the same as the Volcengine Ark API being down?

No. The Doubao app and website are consumer products. Volcengine Ark is the model API platform that Volcengine (ByteDance's cloud) offers to developers, and the two have different entry points. The app can be down while the API is perfectly healthy, and the reverse is also true.

If you are a developer calling the Volcengine Ark API from code, look at cdnping's Volcengine Ark API status page, /status/volcengine. It probes the official API endpoint ark.cn-beijing.volces.com from the Cloudflare edge every 5 minutes.

Here is a real data point for reference. cdnping started collecting on 2026-10-17, and the table below is the first batch of probes after collection began. The window is 2026-10-17 16:40–18:05 (Beijing time), probed from the Cloudflare Denver node (DEN):

MetricVolcengine Ark API
Reachable at the timeYes
Latest response time368 ms
Median (p50)485 ms
p951149 ms
Availability in window100%

These numbers only say that, within this window, the API endpoint was reachable as seen from an overseas edge node. They do not represent latency for users connecting directly from within China, and they are not a long-term statistic. Their use is elimination: if the API endpoint is up but the app won't open, the problem is more likely in the app or on your network.

For what incident levels and components on a status page mean, see How to read the OpenAI and Claude status pages. The approach applies to status pages in general.

Why is Doubao slow or unreachable when a proxy is on?

This cause is very common, yet it rarely comes up in discussions of "Doubao is down".

Doubao is a service hosted in China. Normally your request goes through a domestic ISP straight to the server, a short path. With a global proxy on, the request first leaves the country to the proxy server and then loops back to a data center in China. Typical consequences:

  • Much higher latency, pages that spin forever, and streamed replies that stutter;
  • Connection resets or timeouts, with messages such as "network error" or "network connection abnormal";
  • Your IP location shows as overseas, which can trigger extra verification at login or force you to sign in again.

Services hosted in China should be reached directly. Rule mode (split routing) does exactly this: overseas services go through the proxy, domestic services connect directly. For the background, see /en/learn/split-tunneling.

How do I confirm Doubao is taking the direct domestic route?

Use the "mainland routing check" in cdnping's IP and environment check, /ip. It reads the client IP and latency reported back by Chinese CDNs (NetEase, Tencent, Douyin, Weibo, Youku, Xiaohongshu and others) and returns one of three results:

ResultMeaningEffect on Doubao
Direct domestic connectionNo proxy, or the proxy is not taking over trafficNormal; the proxy is not the cause
Mainland split routingDomestic sites connect directly, overseas sites go through the proxyUsually fine; if Doubao is still slow, check whether your routing rules miss Doubao-related domains
Global proxyDomestic sites are also reached from an overseas exitThe most likely cause; switch to rule mode or turn the proxy off temporarily and try again

How the three results are determined is explained in How Chinese websites see your real IP.

Two other cases are easy to miss:

  • IPv4 and IPv6 exits don't match. If the proxy takes over only IPv4 while IPv6 goes direct (or the reverse), different requests to the same site take different exits, and the symptom is that it works on and off. For how to diagnose this, see IPv6 proxy not working: mismatched exits on dual-stack networks.
  • DNS resolves to an overseas node. If you use a DoH (DNS over HTTPS) resolver located overseas, or your proxy software hands domestic domains to an overseas DNS server, you may get the address of a server far from you. For how to check and change browser and system DoH, see the DNS over HTTPS setup guide.

Follow along: a 10-minute troubleshooting checklist

Go in order. Every step has a clear yes/no branch.

Step 1: Check whether it is a server-side problem (1 minute)

Open /en/down/doubao and see whether there is a cluster of recent reports. If yes, wait. If not, continue.

Step 2: Turn off the proxy or switch to rule mode, then retry (2 minutes)

  • Computer: switch your proxy software to "Rule" mode or quit it, and also check the system settings for a leftover manual proxy (on Windows, Settings → Network & Internet → Proxy; on macOS, System Settings → Network → Details → Proxies).
  • Phone: turn off VPN-type apps, or set Doubao to bypass the proxy inside them.
  • Then open /en/ip and confirm the mainland routing check shows "Direct domestic connection" or "Mainland split routing".

If Doubao opens after this, the proxy was the cause.

Step 3: Confirm connectivity with commands (3 minutes)

Run these in a terminal on your computer (using the web domain as the example):

# 看域名解析到了哪里,正常应该是国内地址
# See where the domain resolves; normally this should be a domestic address
nslookup www.doubao.com

# 看能否建立 HTTPS 连接,以及各阶段耗时
# See whether an HTTPS connection can be established, and the time for each phase
curl -o /dev/null -s -w "dns:%{time_namelookup}s connect:%{time_connect}s tls:%{time_appconnect}s total:%{time_total}s code:%{http_code}\n" https://www.doubao.com/

How to read the results:

  • If nslookup fails, or returns an address that doesn't look domestic, the problem is DNS. Handle it as described in the previous section.
  • If connect takes very long or times out, the problem is on the network path. You can run mtr www.doubao.com (use tracert on Windows) to see which hop is stuck; for how to read it, see How to read traceroute and mtr results.
  • If code is 200 or 3xx, the network layer works and the problem is most likely in the client. Go to Step 4.

If you have a terminal proxy enabled (environment variables such as https_proxy), run unset https_proxy http_proxy all_proxy first and then test. Otherwise you are measuring the path through the proxy.

Step 4: Clear client cache and login state (3 minutes)

  • Web: first open it in a private/incognito window. If that works, clear the Cookies and site data for doubao.com and sign in again. Also try turning off ad blockers, script blockers and similar extensions.
  • Mobile app: fully quit and reopen it. If that doesn't help, clear the cache (not the data). If it still fails, check the app store for an update.
  • Desktop client: quit and reopen it, or reinstall the latest version.
  • Logged out frequently: check that the system time on your phone or computer is correct, and whether you have been switching network exits often in a short time.

Step 5: Still not working? Save the details and report it (1 minute)

Write down the time of the problem, the entry point you used (web/app/client), the network type and the output of the Step 3 commands. Submit a report at /en/down/doubao, and also use the feedback option inside the Doubao app. With this information, the other side can pinpoint the problem more easily.

What does each symptom point to?

SymptomMost likely causeWhat to do first
Nothing opens on any entry point, and many people are talking about itServer-side outage or congestionCheck /en/down/doubao and wait
Spins forever, no answer appearsProxy detour, server peak loadTurn off the proxy or switch to rule mode, check the routing result at /en/ip
"Network error" or "network connection abnormal"Local network, proxy, DNSCompare with another network, run the Step 3 commands
Only the web version won't open; the app worksBrowser cache, extension blockingTry a private window, clear site data
Only the app won't open; the web version worksApp cache or version problemClear cache, update the app
Opens, but you are often logged out or asked to verifyFrequently changing exit IP, odd IP location, wrong system timeFix your network exit, connect directly to domestic services, correct the clock
Your own program gets API errors; the app worksAPI-side issue, unrelated to the appCheck /en/status/volcengine and look up the error code

The last row is often confused with the others. When your program gets API errors, look at the returned HTTP status code first, then compare against /en/status/volcengine to tell rate limiting, authentication and a platform outage apart.

What should users outside China know about accessing Doubao?

When you are outside China, reaching a China-hosted service means crossing borders, so it is normal for it to be slower than at home. If you also run a proxy tool, make sure the traffic to Doubao is not detouring through a third region. Where Doubao is available and what its terms of service say varies by region, and the official statements are authoritative; please follow the terms of service and local laws.

How can I make the next time faster?

  • Keep your proxy software fixed in rule mode, and make sure the domestic services you use often are on the direct list;
  • Bookmark /en/down/doubao and /en/ip, and spend a minute on those two pages first when something goes wrong;
  • If you often use several domestic and overseas AI services together, you can follow the developer network self-check list (2026 edition) to check exit IP, routing, DNS and API latency in one pass. Keep a copy of the results from when things are normal; when something breaks, compare against it and you can quickly see what changed.

The reasoning for diagnosing an overseas AI service such as ChatGPT that won't open is similar to this article, except that the proxy works in the opposite direction. See Is ChatGPT down? Three steps to tell a service outage from your own network problem.
