Is Claude Max Worth It? 5x vs 20x, Claude Code Limits (Oct 2026)

Whether Claude Max is worth it mostly comes down to one question: do you keep hitting the Pro usage cap? According to Claude's official pricing page (checked October 17, 2026), Max starts at $100 per month and comes in two tiers, 5x and 20x, which give 5 times and 20 times the usage of Pro. If Pro is enough, there is no reason to upgrade. If you get rate-limited in Claude Code every day, Max 5x is the first tier to try.

Everything below is accurate as of October 2026. Plans and prices can change at any time, so treat the official Claude pricing page as the source of truth.

What actually differs between Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x?

A few notes:

  • The official page lists 5x and 20x under a single "from $100" price and does not show a separate monthly fee for each tier. Rely on what the checkout page shows before you pay.
  • The monthly API credits are described by Anthropic as credit for building on the Claude platform. They are separate from your subscription usage. Check the official documentation for how to use them.
  • The pricing page also says Claude Cowork has been merged into Claude, rolling out first to Pro and Max users. Availability details are per the official page.

How do the 5-hour window, weekly limit and usage credits fit together?

Anthropic's description is that usage on every plan resets on a rolling 5-hour window, and paid plans also have a weekly limit on top of that. The web app, desktop app, mobile app and Claude Code all draw from the same usage pool, so a long chat in the browser also eats into what you can use in Claude Code.

When you hit the limit you have three options:

  1. Wait for the window to reset, or for the weekly allowance to reset.
  2. Upgrade to a higher tier.
  3. Turn on usage credits, so anything beyond your plan is billed at standard API prices.

Anthropic also reserves the right to add its own weekly or monthly caps. So the "multiplier" is a relative figure, not a fixed number of messages or tokens.

Which tier should I pick? A self-test

There is no reliable universal formula. Here is a process you can follow:

  1. Use Pro normally for a week. Note how often you see a "usage limit reached" message each day, and when.
  2. If you hit the cap only once or twice that week and could continue after a few dozen minutes, stay on Pro.
  3. If you hit the cap within a window almost every day and it disrupts your work, try Max 5x for a month.
  4. If on Max 5x the thing blocking you is the weekly limit rather than the 5-hour window, consider 20x, or turn on usage credits for the overflow and base the decision on what you actually spend.
  5. Review after a month. If you no longer hit limits, keep the tier. If you rarely hit them, drop back to Pro. Plans can be changed month to month, but check the official checkout page for the exact rules.

Max makes the most sense if you run Claude Code for long stretches on refactors or multi-file tasks, keep several sessions open at once, or need the higher output limit. For occasional Q&A, Pro is usually enough.

Is it a usage limit or an outage?

They look different, so don't mix them up:

What you seeMore likely
A message saying you reached your usage limit, with a reset timeUsage limit
Connection timeouts, 5xx errors, repeated failures, and other people reporting the sameService outage or a network problem

To check whether the service itself has a problem, use /en/down/claude-code and /en/status/anthropic. For how to read the official status pages, see How to read the OpenAI and Claude status pages. If the status looks normal but only you can't connect, work through the Claude Code connection troubleshooting checklist layer by layer. For a sense of recent outage volume, see the September-October 2026 AI service incident roundup.

Are there options besides the official subscription?

If you use a command-line tool like Claude Code, you can also consider a monthly-subscription aggregation gateway. For example, AGI Plan is a commercial partner of cdnping. Its Max tier is ¥1,368/month (CNY). All four tiers (Lite ¥49, Plus ¥119, Pro ¥649, Max ¥1,368) differ only in quota. Billing is in Chinese yuan with no overseas credit card required, and your tools only need one endpoint URL changed. See the AGI Plan pricing page. To be clear, AGI Plan states for itself that it is not an officially authorized channel. Its quota units and capability groups differ from Claude's official plans and cannot be compared item by item, and some models are available outside mainland China only. Check the AGI Plan models page for details. For setup, see Custom API endpoint configuration.
