Check Codex Remaining Usage: iOS Widget, Dashboard and /status
There are now three places to check your remaining Codex usage: the usage dashboard on the web, /status in the terminal, and the home screen and lock screen widgets that ChatGPT for iOS added on October 2. Reset times don't follow a fixed schedule. The official guidance is to go by what the usage dashboard shows.
This article is current as of October 2026 and is based on OpenAI's official changelog and pricing documentation.
What changed in the iOS app on October 2 and October 7?
According to the ChatGPT and Codex changelog:
- October 2, ChatGPT for iOS 1.2026.267: adds a home screen widget showing recent tasks on the computer you select. Home screen and lock screen widgets can also show remaining usage and reset time.
- October 7, ChatGPT for iOS 1.2026.272: adds support for opening Codex task links directly on iOS.
In other words, you can see how much is left and when it resets from the lock screen without opening the app. How to add the widget and which sizes are available is covered by iOS and the in-app instructions; the changelog doesn't go into those details.
How can I check my Codex usage?
| Method | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Usage dashboard | Seeing full limits and reset times | The official pricing docs point to chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage |
/status in the CLI | You're already running tasks in a terminal | Run it inside a Codex CLI session to see remaining limits |
| iOS widget | A quick glance when you're away from your computer | Requires ChatGPT iOS 1.2026.267 or later |
The pricing documentation says the number of messages you can send depends on the model and on the size and complexity of the task. The five-hour estimate applies to Plus and standard Business plans, Pro currently has no five-hour limit, and weekly limits may also apply. For how limits work on each plan, see How Codex usage limits work.
When does Codex usage reset?
The pricing documentation gives no fixed reset schedule. It only says to check the usage dashboard for current limits and reset times. So don't try to work it out from "a certain time each day" or "a certain day each week"; read the time shown on the dashboard or widget.
If you want to compare against history, we have an article covering the two resets that have public sources: Codex usage limit reset timeline.
Usage suddenly hit 0, or reset early. How do I tell what happened?
Work through these steps. Each one relies only on information you can see yourself.
- Check the dashboard first. Open the usage dashboard and note the current remaining amount and reset time. The dashboard is the source of truth.
- Look at your tasks. Large tasks, long-running agent chains, or several parallel tasks in the same window burn through usage noticeably faster than ordinary chat. OpenAI also states that consumption depends on the model and task complexity.
- Rule out a service problem. Errors may come from capacity issues or an outage rather than from your quota. Check /en/status/openai, plus our articles on October Codex errors and Is ChatGPT down, or is it my network?.
- Compare with other users. At /en/down/codex you can report "usage was reset" with one click and see whether others reported something similar in the same window. If many people see it at once, a platform-side change is more likely. If it's only you, go back and recheck the first three steps.
- Still doesn't add up. Save a screenshot of the usage dashboard with the time, and report it through OpenAI's official support channels.
Keep in mind that cdnping's report data is submitted voluntarily by users and the sample is limited. Treat it as a reference, not a conclusion.
Summary and next steps
- Use the widget day to day, the usage dashboard for exact numbers, and
/statuswhen you're in the terminal. - There is no fixed reset time. Go by the dashboard.
- When something looks wrong, rule out a service outage first, then compare with other users' reports, and finally contact official support.
