ChatGPT GPT-6 Intelligent UI: Which Model Each Plan Gets

On October 7, 2026, OpenAI rolled out Intelligent UI in ChatGPT and switched the model behind the Chat tab to GPT-6. Answers are no longer just text. They can include interactive charts, forms, maps, checklists, and buttons, and ChatGPT can build small tools on request, such as calculators and bill splitters. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users got it that day; Free and Go followed on October 8. For developers, the thing to watch is that the API's chat-latest snapshot was updated the same day.

Everything below is current as of October 2026 and comes from the reports and OpenAI pages listed at the end.

What is Intelligent UI?

According to MacRumors, OpenAI says ChatGPT can now respond with a "fully interactive interface." Answers can contain graphics, clickable buttons, forms, charts, diagrams, embedded maps, checklists, and multiple-choice follow-up questions. ChatGPT can also quickly generate small tools like bill splitters, simple games, and calculators. The report's example is a recipe component that scales ingredient amounts to the number of diners.

TechCrunch lists use cases including a diagram of wing lift, a bicycle schematic, a multi-day hiking map, and a personal savings calculator. OpenAI's goal is to make complex topics easier to learn.

If you find the visuals too busy, TechCrunch says you can turn them down; the feature is customizable. The report doesn't say where the setting lives, so check the settings page in the ChatGPT app.

Which plan gets which model?

Source: MacRumors. The same day, OpenAI's system card page stated that GPT-6 is rolling out to free and paid users worldwide, replacing GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna in ChatGPT.

So, can free users get GPT-6? Yes. They get Luna, starting October 8.

Which model do Chat, Work, and Codex use?

GPT-6 applies only to the Chat tab. MacRumors states that the models for Work and Codex are unchanged, and the OpenAI system card page also notes that Codex and ChatGPT Work still use the September release.

How to check:

  1. In the Chat tab, open the model picker and read the name currently shown.
  2. Switch to Work or Codex and check again. Don't assume all three use the same model.
  3. If Codex output looks the same as before, that is expected. It doesn't mean the upgrade failed.

For Codex quota rules, see Codex usage limits explained: 5-hour and weekly caps for Plus, Pro, and Business.

What should API developers do?

The OpenAI API changelog records that on October 7 the chat-latest snapshot was updated. It now points to the latest model available to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT (the August 6 update covered only Plus and Pro). The same entry recommends using the GPT-6 model family in production, and treats chat-latest as better suited to testing the latest chat improvements, since its underlying snapshot is updated periodically.

In practice: if your app hard-codes chat-latest, output style, length, and formatting may have changed without any code change on your side. A regression checklist:

  • Replace chat-latest in production code with a pinned model name, and use chat-latest only in test environments.
  • Take your 20 to 50 most common real prompts and compare outputs before and after the change. Pay particular attention to whether formats such as JSON and Markdown tables still pass your parsing code.
  • Check whether output length and token usage changed. For pricing, see GPT-6 Sol / Luna in the API: price table and how cached input is billed.
  • Confirm your timeout and retry settings are still appropriate.

Intelligent UI is an interface feature of the ChatGPT app. None of the sources above say it is returned through the API, so don't assume API responses will include these components.

Were there problems on launch day?

To see whether ChatGPT had outages or incident reports around launch, open cdnping's Is ChatGPT down page, which combines the official status page, API probes, and user reports. For API endpoint probes, see /en/status/openai. Note that cdnping only began collecting data on October 17, 2026, so it doesn't cover October 7 itself. For that day, rely on OpenAI's official status page. To tell whether it's a service outage or your own network, read Is ChatGPT down? Three steps to tell a service outage from a network problem. For how to read status pages, see How to read the OpenAI and Claude status pages.
